Heat saucepan. Add oil, cumin seeds & onion. Sauté for 7-8 minutes, until golden.

Deglaze with water. Add garlic, ginger & green chili and sauté. Add the spice powders and give it a stir.

Add the tomatoes and continue to stir for a minute. Mix in the chickpeas, baking powder (if using), salt, and water. Bring to a boil, cover and cook.

Slightly crush chickpeas with a wooden spoon. Sauté to desired consistency. Add garam masala or chaat masala and cilantro leaves.

Garnish with cilantro, lemon juice and sliced onions and enjoy!
